Assistant Costumier,
Gesturing Weaving Unfolding was my first production as part of my university studies, in which I was given the opportunity to take on the role of assistant costumier on a contemporary dance piece.
Unlike my previous experience making costumes, this was my first production in which I was tasked with the job of bringing a designer's vision to life. I took on many of the smaller costumes, which involved basic alterations such as hemming shirts, shortening sleeves and altering cuffs, collars and buttons. However, I was also given three major makes; a tiered flounce outfit, a full-length circle skirt, and a white capelet. I patterned, sewed, fitted and altered these costumes by myself with guidance from the designer, Tom Vulcan, and the academic staff.
I’m incredibly proud of the work I did on this production, and it was a challenging but gratifying process. The tiered flounce costume I made went on the become the focus of the promotional imagery for this production.
